ASH Clinical News is the proud recipient of its second and third publication awards for 2018 .
The Apex Grand Award for Writing was conferred to the magazine for a June 2017 Editor ’ s Corner column by Editor-in-Chief Mikkael Sekeres , MD , MS , in which he decried the bureaucratic complications , endless paperwork , and time commitment that contract research organizations often require . Sponsored by Communications Concepts , the Apex Awards honor excellence in graphic design and editorial content .
The Communicator Award was also given to ASH Clinical News for its May 2017 cover story , “ Agent Orange and Hematologic Malignancies : The Fog of War Still Hovers .” In the feature article , freelance writer Debra L . Beck examined the scientifically established links between Agent Orange and hematologic malignancies , as well as the U . S . government ’ s evolving response to these connections since the end of the Vietnam War , to reveal the true extent of the damage wrought by the chemical . Granted by the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts , the Communicator Awards recognize creative excellence in the communication field .

Join ASH at CRTI in Latin America
ASH is now accepting applications for the ASH Clinical Research Training Institute ( CRTI ) in Latin America . The highly interactive workshop , created for fellows and early- to mid-career hematology faculty working in Latin America , will provide specialized training sessions on clinical trial design and execution . Participants will :
ASH has selected eight researchers representing seven countries to receive the new ASH Global Research Award . The winners were honored for their work spanning the full spectrum of hematology , including studies on reducing incidence of stroke in children with sickle cell disease in Africa and developing a chimeric antigen receptor T-cell platform for low- and middle-income countries .
“ The ASH Global Research Award identifies talented hematologists … and gives them the tools to succeed right where they are ,” said ASH President Alexis Thompson , MD , MPH . “ In doing so , we want to support future leaders , increase capacity in low- and middle-resource countries , and continue to nurture hematology collaboration across borders .” The 2018-2019 ASH Global Research Award recipients are :

• Renato Luiz Guerino Cunha , MD , PhD , of the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine of São Paulo University in Brazil
• Can Küçük , PhD , of Dokuz Eylül University in Turkey
• Alice Cheung , PhD , of Singapore General Hospital in Singapore
• Paolo Gallipoli , MD , PhD , of the University of Cambridge in the U . K .
• Antonella Nai , PhD , of Ospedale San Raffaele in Italy

CRTI in Latin America will be held April 3 to 4 , 2019 , ahead of the Highlights of ASH ® in Latin America meeting in Lima , Peru . There is no fee to apply , and ASH will cover participants ’ housing and travel expenses . Applications are due October 30 .
