AsBAA talks to Ray Wilson ,

Director Operations , TAG Aviation

What is your role at TAG ?
Director Operations . Please describe the TAG Cadet Pilot scheme . It started in July 2017 and we currently have 3 pilot trainees in various stages of the program . One of the cadets , a lady , has recently passed her Australian Grade two instructors rating , another gentleman is a Grade 3 instructor whilst the last cadet is in the PPL Phase of his training TAG Aviation Asia ( TAA ) opened the opportunity to prospective employees who aspire to be aviators . “ TAG Aviation Asia Aviator ” is a fully sponsored Cadet Pilot Program at Flight Training Adelaide , ( FTA ), based in Adelaide , South Australia . This school trains sponsored Airline cadets and the program we run is based on the same footprint the airlines follow . See www . flighttrainingadelaide . com for more info on the school . The sponsored program includes accommodation , allowances , ground and flight training up to the level of a Commercial Pilot . Whilst on course TAA provides oversight with management visits to the school and we are kept abreast of progress with monthly reports on each cadet . Once CPL is obtained the cadets do an instructor rating at FTA and followed by a 3-year tenure as a flight instructor with them . This gives them the opportunity to gain experience and advanced ratings ( IFR , Multi and Aerobatic ) with the aim of returning to Hong Kong with an ATPL and at least 1500 hrs . TAG Aviation Asia is the first business aviation management company in Asia to introduce an employer sponsored flying program .
Where is the scheme in operation ? Scheme is in operations at Flight Training Adelaide . www . flighttrainingadelaide . com
Can Asian students and aspiring cadets access the scheme ? At the moment the scheme is open to aspiring cadets who are employees of TAG Aviation Asia .
How do you select candidates ? We utilise the same selection process as airline and self-sponsored clients of FTA use . This includes a battery of tests , aptitude testing , physiological tests and panel interviews . The college has a big say in the outcome as the cadets will be placed with them as instructor post pilot training .
Philip Balmer , Director Maintenance , Tinny Tse , Cadet Pilot , Eddie Wong , Director , TAG Aviation Asia .
What are your plans to grow or change the Cadet scheme . The plan is to have a steady flow of talented pilots into the company . The next step in the process has not been activated yet , but the plan is to have the cadets placed as a cruise relief pilots at a reputable airline for two years . This will help expose them to international operations , give them an opportunity to gain more hours ( Major stumbling block for progression in the corporate world due to low utilization of aircraft ) and cement a structured operating philosophy before they return and are eligible to fly on our aircraft as First Officers .
If students are interested in knowing more about the scheme , how can they find out more ? They can apply on the TAG Aviation Asia employment portal or contact our Flight Crew Resources Manager ( Recruitment ) Mrs . Paula Rousseau at prousseau @ tagaviation . asia
