Steve Rosendale Felix and His Lighter
I paint the fantasies I had as a child of what I
thought life would be like as an adult. I became
obsessed with television and film when I was very
young and watched hundreds of hours of 1960's reruns which was all that seemed to be playing on TV
in the early 80's. These were my first impressions of
the outside world even though they were 20 years
out of date and in no way representative of reality. I
think it was the disappointment I felt at life "never
turning out to be quite like it is on TV", that urged
me to re-capture this world in paint. I use the term
'Incidental' to describe the work, in that the use of
film as subject matter is really secondary to the
mood or feeling I am trying to convey. Film is
simply a device that I manipulate to express the
deeper, almost subconscious reasons for the choice
of scene or figure.
