Lagoa de Óbidos Living Heritage Country: Portugal Lenght: 04’07’’ Director: Mário João Carvalho Producer: GITUR - Instituto Politécnico de Leiria Copyright: Instituto Politécnico De Leiria Locations: Óbidos Lagoon (Lagoa de Óbidos) PLAY Synopsis Director’s Bio Óbidos Lagoon is located in the south of the Leiria District in the Center Region of Portugal. The Lagoon occupies part of two municipalities: Caldas da Rainha in the north and Óbidos in the South. This coastal lagoon is a water body that is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow dune system. The Lagoon contacts directly to the sea through a temporary channel that naturally tends to close due to siltation and that requires human intervention to reopen it to the ocean. Morphologically the Lagoon is located in a small depression of the Montejunto waterbasin with minor basins within it from which the river Real and River Arnóia basins are the most important elements. It is estimated that Óbidos Lagoon was formed about 5000 years ago following the sea level rise from the flandrian transgression. By the end of the Neolithic era, the stabilization of the sea level (roughly for the level we presently know) contributed to the formation of this coastal lagoon. Although Óbidos lagoon is the biggest coastal lagoon in Portugal it is estimated that it was about eight times its actual size. Water coverage varies in the lagoon over the year but its average area reaches about 6.000.000 square meters and it’s considered the biggest coastal wetland in the country.
