retriever who had a lonesome heart were now inseparable. The young woman laid her hand on the little girl’s atop the dog’s head and said, “Nancy, my name is Ann, and if you don’t mind, you can stay with us for a while.” Nancy looked at Ann and said, “Can Sam and I be friends?” Ann turned to Sam, then back to Nancy and said, “I think you both need a friend,” nodding her head with approval. For the rest of the day the dog never left Nancy’s side. Around one o’clock, after Nancy’s favorite lunch of grilled cheese and peaches, Nancy and Sam curled up on a blanket looking at a Madeline book which Nancy loved. Ann smiled at the two of them laying at her feet in front of the couch where she was sitting. Nancy was ‘reading’ her version of the story to Sam, and Ann stifled a giggle as the dog’s eyes seemed to be watching and listening to the story as each page was turned. When the end of the story was announced, Nancy turned on her side and put her little arm over Sam’s back. She closed her eyes, and after a few minutes the two friends were fast asleep.
