the sleepy child barely stirred as she was tucked into a cozy bed for the night. She was sitting up in the bed next morning when the young woman quietly pushed the half opened door to enter the cheerfully light, and child-like decorated room. She sat down on the bed beside the child and decided now was the proper time for formal introductions. Before a word had been spoken a huge, long-haired golden retriever came bouncing into the room, launched itself onto the foot of the bed, and to the little girl’s delight, crawled quickly between the woman and herself. “Well hello Sam,” said the young woman. The dog lay still, moving its eyes back and forth between the child and woman. The child reached out and laid her hand on top of the dog’s head. The animal’s eyes became instantly transfixed on the child’s face and neither made a movement. The young woman smiled and said, “Nancy, this is Sam. Sam this is Nancy.” The child’s hand lifted and dropped several times, patting the dog’s head. The retriever’s great tail began to wag. An instant friendship was formed.
