Evangeline, musical drama

Written by Normand Godin

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the first Acadians in south Louisiana. As part of the state-wide celebration of this event, Le Grand Réveil Acadien (The Great Acadian Awakening) 2015 is scheduled for October 3-12, 2015. It is an event to celebrate Acadian - or "Cajun," as it's called in Louisiana - heritage, bring together Acadians from around the world, and highlight the importance of the French language for the survival of our culture. This nine day festival in South Louisiana will feature family reunions, Cajun and folk concerts, genealogy lectures, crafts seminars, a traditional Acadian parade called a Tintamarre, and commemoration ceremonies marking the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Acadians in Louisiana. GRA participants will also have the opportunity to attend the 38th annual Festivals Acadiens et Créoles and enjoy Louisiana's world-famous Cajun cuisine.

In conjunction with these festivities, Abbey Players is pleased to present the musical drama, Evangeline. Written by Canadian playwright Normand Godin, the play is an adaptation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem of the same name. It is a tale of an Acadian girl named Evangline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadian people from the Canadian province of present-day Nova Scotia (1755).

Performances are Oct. 2, 3 4, 9, 10 & 11. Tickets are available at www.abbeyplayers.com or by calling 337-893-2442.
