ART OF SAFARI MAGAZINE Safari-and-Beach Holidays | Page 4

Looking back, it’s clear to me that I’ve lead a very lucky life, one filled with travels all over the globe. Sifting through memories, it’s apparent that there are two holiday types that I’ve sought out, over and above the rest, again and again. Going on safari, and going to the beach.

So what is it about these types of escapes that appeal to me, I ask myself. More so than, say, ski trips or sightseeing tours. Well, for starters they both offer warm weather, natural beauty, wildlife, wide-open spaces and plenty of time outdoors. For both, you can also choose to be as active or lazy as you like.

On safari, you can go on game drives twice a day if you fancy, and in between enjoy walking safaris, horse riding, camel trekking, canoeing, bungee jumping and more. Or, you can find a comfortable spot overlooking a waterhole, put your feet up and simply wait for wildlife to come to you.

The same is true for beach holidays. Want to go scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking or water-skiiing? Go for it – I’ll be sipping cocktails on a lounger and taking lethargic swims whenever I feel the need to cool off.

And finally, both of these holidays offer magical experiences you can’t find anywhere else, things like gliding along a delta in a mokoro or playing castaway on a sandbar.

The only problem is choosing between the two. Well, we have a solution for that: combined safari-and-beach holidays that whisk you from savannah to umbrella.

Find out all about these best-of-both breaks in this issue, as we transport you from the plains of the Masai Mara to the shores of Mozambique – and beyond. Then go buy a safari hat that matches your swimwear…
