It could be read that she is supporting others and caring them. Wearing red curtain, she is staring other figures of the painting with love. For me, it is possible to see her as personification of the idea, Philanthropy because of her posture and the color she wear, the red.

I see two women in the middle of painting as personification of Equality. But this is not a traditional since there is no icon of Equality such as scale. They are wearing white, which often stands for ‘Equality. Not just because of the color, but their posture also make me take them as personification of Equality. Their posture is similar to the upright posture of Manet’s Olympia(1863).

Defining Equality with Olympia is very hard and it seems not proper. But, when you think about Olympia as the one put audience and artwork on the same line, it is okay to say Olympia has a little sense of Equality. Also, considering the time, 1900s, these two women’s confidential posture is representing women who have just stepped into the society. Thus, these two figures are personification of Equality by applying the new women,
