Art & Inspiration N° 2 - Summer-Fall / Été-Automne 2013 | Page 99

A native of São Paulo, Brazil, artist Zília Nazarian first discovered the arts as a child with courses in painting and piano. An Artist in all forms, she also studied ballet for a number of years and sang background vocals for the Brazilian singer Eduardo Dusek in her early 20s. When she became a mother, Zília redirected her focus from the arts itself to the art of love by dedicating her time to raising her children. In 1992, she rediscovered art with the film "Camille Claudel.” It was at that moment that she decided to be a sculptor.

In addition to studying with the great Brazilian sculptor Domenico Serio Calabrone and taking drawing classes with Sonia Schaffer and Edson Beleza in São Paulo, Zília studied art at several institutions in the city, such as the Tomie Ohtake Cultural Institute, the Art Scriptorium, and the School of Fine Arts. Her sculptures have been exhibited in Sao Paulo at the Librairie Française, the British Cultural Center and Entrecores Espaço de Arte as well as around the world in France (Maison et Objet-Metiers D’Art), Monaco (C&C ART Galler, Hotel Lê Metrópole), Italy (Muzeo Nazionale de Villa D’Este in Tivoli), and the United States (District Court of Washington). She has won several prestigious awards for her work from Brazilian institutions such as Galpão das Artes-Casa do Restaurador, the Fine Arts Society in Rio de Janeiro, the Amazonas Art Fair, Teatro Municipal de Cabo Frio as well as from the Geneva Arts Fair in Switzerland.

Since September 2012, Zília has been in a part-time resident in Tours, France, where she has been studying art therapy at the AFRATAPEM School. Art & Inspiration had the pleasure to spend a moment with Zília and get a glimpse of the artist behind the sculptures.
