A&I: Going to a different topic, how would you define inspiration?
CM: Inspiration is being saturated with a thought, with an extraordinary thought that has the power to redirect what you are doing. You’re inspired to do something. And it comes out of the blue. I often times think that an inspiration is an act of grace, because that’s how grace works. A genuine inspiration is like grace.
A&I: If a person receives an inspiration, does it mean that it’s part of their Sacred Contract?
CM: If an inspiration is something that you resonate with, that it feels like “I need to do this,” then it’s coming from something that is resonating with your soul. It’s congruent with your soul. So you have to assume that this is on target with your life. And that’s inherent with way a contract functions: “I’m doing something that is in keeping with the whole of my life’s journey.” Think of your contracts as a huge tapestry, a huge mandala, that’s constantly in motion. And every choice, every thing is all part of this huge mandala. Don’t measure a contract with, “Should I do one thing? This? That?” Don’t do that. It’s a mystical document. It’s a mystical element where it is a constant process, a constant mystical force that is measured by whether you maintain congruence with truth. The greatest measure for you is whether you are congruent at the end of the day with your choices. If you stayed congruent with who you are, if you haven’t betrayed your fundamental self, then at the end of the day, you can assume, “I am in harmony with the contracts that I am living, that I have been given to live.” Acts of betrayal – personal betrayal or betrayal of another person – is the signal that you are out of congruence with agreements you have promised to make and to fulfill. Keep your eyes on living congruently with truth as it presents itself to you in every way - your inner truth, not betraying yourself, not negotiating your inner self. When you are in conflict, withdraw and ask yourself the right questions. Never ask yourself, “Why is that person attacking me?” but rather: “Why am I losing power here? Why am I engaging with this person? Why does this person scare me? And how am I going to respond?” Never make it about the other, because you can never change the other. And you can never reason with a monster coming at you. Always keep it about you, in the right way. Not the narcissistic way, but in the right, self-examining way.
CM : Ma génération recherchait vraiment ouvertement à fuir la tradition et à véritablement, et profondément, trouver des réponses. Et ce n’est plus le but des gens qui ont la vingtaine-trentaine aujourd’hui. La roue a tourné. Le but et le sens n’ont plus la même signification pour eux. Je pense que ce qui les intéresse s’est déplacé, dans le salut environnemental. Ils doivent survivre de manière nouvelle, et en matière de survie, ils se doivent d’être réalistes et bien ancrés dans le réel. Ils font face à 60, 70 ans de temps difficiles. Je ne serai plus là pour le voir mais leur période ne sera pas de tout repos. Leurs objectifs sont bien plus pratiques parce qu’ils doivent l’être. Pour nous, il s’agissait de briser les barrières entre les mondes. A présent, pour eux il s’agit de poser les bases pour le monde où ils devront vivre, et de survivre à la disparition du monde dans lequel ils vivent actuellement.
A&I : Et pour changer de sujet, comment définiriez-vous l’inspiration ?
CM : L’inspiration c’est être submergé par une pensée extraordinaire qui a le pouvoir de vous réorienter. Vous êtes inspiré pour faire quelque chose. Et ça sort de nulle part. Je pense souvent qu’une inspiration est un acte de grâce, parce que c’est ainsi que la grâce fonctionne. Une inspiration véritable est comme la grâce.
A&I : Si une personne reçoit une inspiration, est-ce que cela veut dire que cela fait partie d’un Contrat Sacré ?
CM : Si par inspiration on entend quelque chose qui fait sens pour vous, qui vous donne l’impression que « vous devez faire ça, » alors c’est ce que ça vient de quelque chose qui fait écho à votre âme. C’est en accord avec elle. Vous devez alors assumer que c’est un des objectifs de votre vie. Et ça fait partie à part entière de la façon dont un contrat fonctionne : « Je fais quelque chose dans le respect du cours que doit prendre ma vie. » Pensez à vos contrats comme si c’était une immense tapisserie, un énorme mandala, perpétuellement en mouvement. Et chaque prise de décision, chaque chose fait partie de cet immense mandala. Ce n’est pas le genre de contrat où vous devez vous demander « quelle est la chose que je dois faire ? Celle-ci ? Celle-là ? » Non, ne faites pas ça. C’est un document mystique. C’est un quelque chose de mystique où c’est un processus constant, une force mystique constante qui est évaluée en fonction de la façon dont vous respectez le fait d'être en harmonie avec la vérité.
A&I: Thank you so much, Caroline, for sharing your deep insights and counsel with us. You have helped and inspired so many individuals through your books, workshops and online presence. And you are such an inspiration for Art & Inspiration! We would love to know: How does art play a role in your life? Do you have any favorite artists or paintings?
CM: I love art. My house is filled with art and everything about my house is artistic. I think art is basic to a beautiful life. Nicholas Roerich is my favorite artist by far. I absolutely adore his work. He was a mystic and his soul was enchanted. Of course, I love the classics: Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Raphael. And Rembrandt. And, oh my God, Bernini. They are icons. They are breathless wonders. I can’t even take my eyes off something that Bernini did. I can’t stop looking at it. I can’t stop wondering, “How did he do that?”
A&I: Yes, he is amazing,…
CM: So of those greats, Bernini is probably number one for me. And then the way art plays a role in my life…I see the world artistically. I think artistically. For me, everything is about color and form and beauty. Without art, it’s emptiness - it’s complete emptiness. It’s a void. When I walk into someone’s home, I think the first thing I look at is: do they have art? I never thought about that until right now. The first thing I notice is if someone is artistic in the way they keep their home - if they have artistic style, if they appreciate art and if they have art around their house. And I don’t mean expensive art – I just mean do they have anything artistic - from candles to whatever- that shows any appreciation of art. It’s important that I had my house done artistically because I like to live with art.
A&I: What is one of your greatest inspirations in life?
CM: Freedom. I am impassioned by the need to be free. Freedom and creativity. I think more than anything I can’t bear not to be free - not be free in my mind, in my spirit, in my life. Freedom to me is absolutely everything. I am very inspired by the founding fathers of the United States, their passion for freedom, and how they ended the Declaration of Independence: we pledge our honor, our happiness, everything, for the sake of liberty. It meant so much. Acts of integrity inspire me as well as acts of great generosity of the human spirit, for example where someone truly puts their life on the line and is willing to go to prison for others, for those who don’t even think about them and who could care less that they’re there. That inspires me. And in a funny way, acts of cowardice are an inspiration. Because that’s exactly what I never want to be. I never want to be ruled by being a coward or do things that come from darkness. It’s harmful. So you can be inspired by many, many things. And I believe very deeply in what human beings can do if they make contact with their own holiness. They’re a force to reckon with and no one can stop a human being like that. Now that impresses me.
A&I: And if you could meet 4 or 5 people from any period of history to the present day, who would they be?
CM: I really would want to meet Jesus and Mary Magdalene. I would love to meet Elizabeth the 1st. And Thomas Jefferson, absolutely. And now for my last, this is a toss-up: I’m enamored with Winston Churchill and with Peter the Great. Or perhaps I would meet a real demon like Adolf Hitler to really see evil up close.
A&I: That would be terrifying!
CM: No, no. I’d really look at this son of a - this guy in the eyes. But you know, it would have been great to meet Cleopatra because then I could ask about the pyramids, which I would really love to know about.

CM : J’adore l’art. Ma maison est remplie d’art et tout ce qui concerne ma maison est artistique. J’estime que l’art est la base d’une belle vie. Nicholas Roerich est de loin mon artiste préféré. J’adore littéralement son travail. C’était un mystique et son âme était magique. Bien sûr, j’adore les classiques : Michel-Ange, De Vinci et Raphael. Et Rembrandt. Et, mon Dieu, Le Bernin. Ce sont des légendes. Des merveilles à vous couper le souffle. Je suis même incapable de lâcher du regard quelque chose que Le Bernin a réalisé. Je ne peux m’en détacher les yeux. Je n’arrête pas de me demander, « Mais comment il a fait ça ? »
A&I : Oui, c’est incroyable…
CM : Aussi parmi ces grands artistes, Le Bernin est probablement le numéro un pour moi. Et puis il y a la façon dont l’art joue un rôle dans ma vie… Je vois le monde de manière artistique. Je pense de manière artistique. Pour moi, tout n’est que couleur, forme, beauté. Sans l’art, c’est le néant, le néant complet. Le vide. Quand je pénètre chez quelqu’un, je crois que la première chose que je regarde c’est : est-ce qu’il y a de l’art ? Je n’y avais jamais songé jusqu’à maintenant. La première chose que je remarque est si quelqu’un est artistique dans la manière dont il entretient sa maison, s’il y a un style artistique, s’il apprécie l’art et s’il y a de l’art dans sa maison. Je ne parle pas d’art cher, je veux juste dire s’il a quelque chose d’artistique, depuis des bougies jusqu'à tout ce qui peut montrer qu’on aime l’art. C’est important pour moi d’avoir arrangé ma maison de manière artistique parce que j’aime vivre avec l’art.
A&I : Qu’est-ce qui est une de vos plus grandes sources d’inspiration dans la vie ?
CM : La liberté. Je suis une passionnée de ce besoin d’être libre. La liberté et la créativité. Je crois que, plus que tout, je ne supporterais pas de ne pas être libre, ne pas être libre dans ma tête, mon esprit, ma vie. La liberté pour moi, c’est vraiment tout. Je suis très inspirée par les pères fondateurs des États-Unis, leur passion pour la liberté et comment ils ont terminé la Déclaration d’Indépendance : nous engageons notre honneur, notre bonheur, tout, au nom de la liberté. Cela signifiait tant. Les actes d’intégrité m’inspirent aussi bien que les actes de grande générosité de l’esprit humain, par exemple quand quelqu’un risque sa vie ou la prison pour d’autres, pour des gens qui ne pensent même pas à lui et qui se moquent pas mal qu’il soit là ou non. C’est ce qui m’inspire. Et d’une façon curieuse, les actes de lâcheté sont aussi une inspiration. Parce qu’ils sont exactement ce que je ne veux jamais être. Je ne veux jamais être dirigée par ma lâcheté ou de la noirceur. C’est dangereux. On peut donc être inspiré par beaucoup, vraiment beaucoup de choses. Et je crois très profondément en ce que l’être humain peut accomplir s’il entre en contact avec sa propre sainteté. Il y a là une force dont il faut tenir compte et personne ne peut arrêter un être humain juste comme ça. Et ça, ça m’impressionne.
