ArtistS chuck and alice harmon: W hat was Dian Zahner’s impact on our life?  Only that it changed immediately upon meeting her.  We met at the old YMCA, in a senior fitness class.  We have made a lot of acquaintances, but none more dynamic.  We invited her and John to a party at our house.  When she saw we both painted, she started promoting Avenue West.  It took a year, but once we hung our art, WE were hooked. Although our association with Avenue West was to last only a couple of years, we continued to run into Dian, because if you’re in the art scene in Spokane, that’s what happens. The last time we saw her was at a planning meeting for a new idea.  She was energetically involved as always, with no indication of what was to come.  If you see the image of the QR card on these pages, know that Dian was part of the team that put it together. from dian zahner herself: “A s a fiber artist I enjoy designing conceptual pieces that bring together tex- ture, shape and color.  My main inspiration is nature and its many tactile and visual stimulations.  Weaving, whether on baskets or wall pieces, is a medium that is un- limited in possible materials—such as reeds, grasses, metals, yarns, kelp, handmade paper and even paint—that can be interplayed with one another to create pieces of visual art that are sensual and tactile.       As a painter, I use my world travels to paint images of native peoples doing their crafts, working at their jobs, or just holding their babies.  However, some of my paintings are compositions of color and design, maybe coming from the mind or from experiments with the medium on the paper. “ In memory of Dian Zahner The Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens (non- profit 501c3) “Art in Bloom” benefit exhibit is donating 100% of the sale of her art to the Corbin Art Center. This is at the request of her husband John Zahner. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens and Corbin Art Center, owned and operated by the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department. A memorial service celebrating Dian’s life will be held at 3pm Sat., November 11th, at the Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 Gleneden, Spokane, Washington. 44 ART CHOWDER MAGAZINE
