Art Chowder : So you ’ re a servant to the clay ?
GINGER : I ’ m not really a servant ; I ’ m more of a facilitator for stories to emerge from the clay . I ’ m connected to the stories . For instance , the candlesticks I create , speak to being part of the light . I believe we should all try to be part of the light in our world . My dragons have strong wings that can fly through any kind of storm . That ’ s the kind of strength we need to get through changes in life and the things that get thrown at us . I ’ ve been asked to create a dragon show for Spokane Art Gallery in Sept / Oct 2018 . The show will be called “ There Be Dragons !” I ’ m really looking forward to it and I ’ m slowly building many dragons .
Art Chowder : Excellent ! Where do you find inspiration , and how would you describe your style ?
GINGER : Nature inspires me , as does feeling the clay and waiting for the story to emerge . Sometimes it ’ s all in fantasy .
I suppose my style is expressionistic , influenced by our human condition and the natural settings around where I work . For example , near the ocean my work is more seascape , with my impression of the sea . Here in the Pacific Northwest I ’ m more aware of textures like bark , pine needles , and rocks . I play with the idea of insides and outsides , and what lies below surfaces .
Art Chowder : Okay , so what dreams or goals lurk below your surface ?
GINGER : My every day goal is to pay for clay and glazes , that ’ s all I really need to keep creating . Money isn ’ t why I create . “ Relax and play in clay ” is my goal for myself and others . So for my business , I provide availability in my studio for others to create . Often they are those who can ’ t afford to take classes - families , singles , elders , couples - all of us need creative outlets . Sharing my dreams is my goal because it makes me thankful for what I have . This is long term , as I ’ m aiming to reach 120 years !
Art Chowder : Wow , that is long term !
" Spirit Protector "
GINGER : Yes , and I have both feet on the accelerator . I have no brakes . I just go !
The next step of my business plan is to expand from GO Art Center , to GO Art Community . I ’ ve planned an intentional community , not a commune , or cohousing , just a group of people choosing how to live through like-mindedness . I ’ d like GO Art Community to start here in Spokane and be quasi-nomadic depending on the seasons and climate , with communities in Hawaii , New Mexico , Portugal , Bali , and all over the world . It would be familiar and comfortable , sharing with others of all generations and nationalities . That ’ s my “ Second Half of Life ” goal — a GO Art Community network . I ’ ve been meeting with others who have similar wishes , and developers who understand .
