Deborah Fugit:
2015 “Golden Fork Award”
It was nearly seven years ago
when Deborah Fugit joined the
fight against hunger. Around
that time, she was responsible for
organizing a birthday party for
Lyda Hill, her former employer
and a generous North Texas Food
Bank supporter.
Because the event was held at the
Food Bank’s distribution center
on Cockrell Hill Road, Deborah
had the chance to learn all about
the mission to close the gap on
hunger. She was so moved by
what she saw that she decided to
make a difference and volunteer,
helping put food on the table for
neighbors in need.
With only a limited amount of
time to help outside her busy
work schedule, Deborah needed
a new volunteer opportunity
that would allow her to balance
her job responsibilities with her
desire to serve. Fortunately,
because the Food Bank offers so
many ways to get involved, she
had no trouble finding a good
fit as a volunteer with the Food
Bank's Nourishing Neighbors
program.
After careful consideration,
Deborah became one of the first
volunteers for the program,
which delivers fresh produce
and other staples to homebound
neighbors who are age 50
and over. Since the program’s
beginning, she’s been able to
bring joy, companionship and
nutritious food to struggling
seniors — including Pat and John
on page 8.
In addition to volunteering with
Nourishing Neighbors, Deborah
also organizes a group volunteer
effort at the North Texas Food
Bank with friends and members
of her Bible study group. Every
few months, they meet to prepare
Food 4 Kids backpacks, filling
bags with shelf-stable, kidfriendly foods made available to
chronically hungry children every
Friday during the school year.

Around the Table
After so many years of dedicated
service to the cause of hunger
relief, the North Texas Food Bank
recently recognized Deborah
as Volunteer of the Year with
a “Golden Fork Award.” We
hope this serves as a reminder
of how thankful we are for her
commitment to fighting hunger
in our community.
