Signing up for the council’s garden
waste collection service is a great
way of keeping on top of unwanted
cuttings, leaves, twigs and grass – as well
as saving a trip to the recycling centre. It
costs £75 for an annual subscription to
the fortnightly collection, with a choice of
wheelie bin or reusable sacks. There are
also concessionary rates available. Visit

Live in, or own, a house with five
or more non-family members
living in it? Big changes to the way
licensing works will come into force on 1
October. Houses in multiple occupation
(HMOs) will come under new national
rules that will, among other things,
introduce minimum bedroom sizes and
demand that landlords comply with the
council’s waste disposal scheme. There
may be certain exemptions – but find
out more at ealingnewsextra.co.uk/

Work on the new Ealing Central
Library will begin in September,
with the current one closing on 31
August. The new library will open nearby
in Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre
in spring 2019 and, in the meantime, a
temporary point will open at the current
site for collecting books and returning
items. Ealing Council is working with
developer British Land on the scheme.

Summer’s
favourite
This photo of a girl dancing
in Pitshanger Park with
sprinklers going off in the
background on the bowling
green was the picture you
voted for as the winner of
our fourth Seasons of Ealing
photography competition.
It was taken by Vahe Saboonchian of Ealing, and won the summer
contest with more than a third of the public vote.
Readers voted for their favourite on our EalingLondon Facebook page,
from a shortlist of nine photos. The runner-up was a picture of a dog
in Gunnersbury Park meadow by Nick Henderson. It gained almost a
quarter of the vote.
Well done everyone who was shortlisted – and thank you to everyone
who took part. Apologies to those people who had any trouble using
the poll via mobile app.
You can still view all nine shortlisted entries at
ealingnewsextra.co.uk/gallery and stay posted on future
competitions by registering for free email updates at
www.ealing.gov.uk/register and ticking Ealing News Extra.
Rubbish and recycling
change on its way
Street cleaning, rubbish and recycling services are to be
brought under the control of Ealing Council, following the end
of its contract with its current provider Amey.
By founding a local authority company to provide
environmental services across the borough, the council
decided it would have greater control and more flexibility to
respond to residents’ concerns and also to hit its ambitious
target of becoming London’s top recycling borough. The
council said that, at the very least, all staff will earn the London
Living Wage and apprenticeships will also be put in place.
The current contract with Amey runs until July 2020 and it was
a mutual decision not to renew it.
