En route
to a career
“Sometimes people don’t know what
they want to do but once they are on an
apprenticeship there are lots of different
roads that they can go down,” said
Ealing Council apprentice Tahiry Hamlyn.
Chelsea Keenan reports.
T
he council’s apprenticeship scheme recruits 25
people each year. Apprentice placements are open
to anyone more than 16 years of age and not in
full-time education.
Tahiry, who is an apprentice for the council’s school travel
team, added: “I decided to do an apprenticeship because I have
a daughter so I wanted to study at the same time as her. The fact
that you are earning and learning at the same time is a big help.”
As part of the council’s school transport team Tahiry helps
schools to encourage families to ditch their cars and walk,
scoot and cycle to school safely instead.

‘IT GIVES YOU OPTIONS. IT CAN BE FOR ANYONE’
Training as a surveyor, Suzanna Lovell’s career path is a
shining example of the number of opportunities that are
available for apprentices. She is about to embark on the
council’s first apprenticeship degree.
She said: “I would recommend an apprenticeship because it
gives you options. It can be for anyone and it is a good stepping
stone, giving you the experience of work life as well as studying.”
