CHILD OBESITY ‘Interesting and dynamic’ Councillor Yvonne Johnson, the council’s cabinet member for schools and children’s services, said: “The work of APPLE, Brentford FC Community Sport Trust and the council shows how many programmes there are in Ealing to inform the younger generation about staying healthy. Children are taught in interesting and dynamic ways about food and how to lead a healthy lifestyle and, as a result, are more likely to stick to that when they become adults. I am very proud of the hard work these programmes do with our young people and thank all of the people who get involved voluntarily to make it happen.” aged 24, volunteers for the charity. She said: “The cooking is invaluable, I went to university and no one knew how to do anything in the kitchen. The difference it made being able to feed myself was huge. “Unhealthy food seems cheaper because you can get a burger for the same price as a bag of carrots, but when you realise that with a range of ingredients you can create enough food for a week, it is a lot cheaper and it is healthier.” Read the full story and watch a video of APPLE in action and our chat with Jessica at ealingnewsextra.co.uk/ features/apple Doing it together S chool pupils and their families are reaping the rewards of a programme that champions healthy eating and physical activity. Nearly a third of children in England aged between two and 15 years old are overweight or obese, according to a survey carried out by the Health and Social Care Information Centre. However, Active Living Fun food In Ealing (ALFIE) is doing all it can to tackle that statistic locally by supporting families with children who have been identified as being above a healthy weight. ALFIE runs fun and interactive workshops that focus on healthy eating and nutrition, including cooking clubs; alongside physical activities that help improve fitness and build confidence, including ‘active play’ sessions and football camps. There are even 10 week summer boot camps for families. The focus is on motivating children and the whole family to explore healthier lifestyle choices together and showing them how even making small changes can make a big difference. It is organised by One You Ealing, a health and wellbeing service commissioned by Ealing Council. Read more at ealingnewsextra.co.uk/ features/alfie around ealing    September 2018 17
