Almost all of these 160 apprentices, who were placed within different council departments, have successfully completed the full scheme to ‘graduate’. Some have then gone into jobs with the council. Others have moved on to employment, education or further training elsewhere. And the council is now looking for its latest group of apprentices. The scheme involves a one-year training agreement with the option of a second year, and an allowance starting from £160 per week. In return, the council is looking for enthusiastic and motivated people aged 16-24 who are willing to learn new skills. It is designed to give young people a chance to gain valuable work experience within the council as well as vocational training qualifications. Apprentices have been placed in all kinds of roles, ranging from learning business administration to working in the parks team, or training to become a surveyor.
