Competition winner Sabrina’s son Caeden feeding the lemurs

Lemurs get new names
As many of you will know, a competition on our
website ealingnewsextra.co.uk and our Facebook
page (/EalingLondon) saw residents suggest new
names for the troop of three lemurs at Hanwell Zoo.
A shortlist was chosen and then a public poll
handed the final decision to all of you. The winning
selection ended up being Maddie, Casper and
Madagascar. The person who originally suggested
the names was Sabrina Slade and she won a
chance to visit the lemurs and also a pair of annual
memberships for the zoo.
Two other lucky winners were chosen at random
from among those people who voted in the poll.
Each were to get the same prize as Sabrina.
Hanwell Zoo manager Jim Gregory said: “We had some really nice
name suggestions come through and it was fun watching the votes
come in and wondering what our lemurs were going to be called.”
The zoo is running an ‘animal wonderland’ Christmas promotion
between 2 – 24 December, when visitors will get the chance to
make their own decorations for its Christmas tree. Visit

Transforming spaces
The latest phase of the council’s Transform Your Space scheme
is giving a helping hand to two local projects that are sure to
prove a sweet deal for the whole community.
Groups can bid for Transform Your Space funding to improve
unloved or neglected corners and it has backed the Horsenden
Grape and Honey Farm project with a £10,750 contribution. It
will transform a derelict plot of land into a sustainably-run farm
producing organic honey and growing grapes. Produce will then be
marketed to local schools and hospitals as a healthy food option.
The other project being supported by Transform Your Space
this year is the creation of a cherry tree woodland walk and
wildflower meadow in West Acton, with a £32,600 contribution.
The project team has already successfully raised more than
£51,000 to restore the space to its former beauty.

Harassment
Ealing Council passed a motion to prevent
potential harassment and intimidation at the
Marie Stopes women’s health clinic in Mattock
Lane, Ealing. It followed a complaint about
the behaviour of protesters outside the clinic,
which led to an ongoing investigation. Some
form of action or legal order may follow. Visit
