t’s a brilliant way to meet
people, have some fun and
stay fit,” explained Pamela
Comley who, at 74, plays
short tennis twice a week– one of
many local sports sessions aimed
at older people.
Perivale Community Centre has
been home to a senior short tennis
group for more than 20 years, with
players even competing in the annual
Better Club Games – an event where over-55s
from clubs across London compete at the Olympic Park.
Pamela, from North Greenford, said: “We’ve got players of all
abilities and everyone is welcome. Not everyone is interested in
competing and that’s fine. Sports can be so much fun and it’s never
too late to try something new.”
The community centre is one of a growing number of venues offering
sessions and classes aimed at older adults right across the borough.
From yoga and pilates, to aqua and circuits, there is something to suit
everyone at the borough’s leisure centres. In addition, independently
run groups are offering
sessions such as walking

“It’s great that there
are lots of different sports
sessions aimed at the over
50s, which might help people
who haven’t played before
or haven’t done any sport
for a long time to feel more
confident about getting
involved,” said Pamela.
For those who want
to make sure they stay
fit, but do not want to
take part in a sport, the
borough now has a free
10-week strength and
balance programme. Email
