Interstate Compact Supports
Transitioning Military Students
As mobile military students move through various sets of
curriculums, graduation requirements, and school systems they
can suffer academically and socially. This is finally a front burner
issue with many school districts in the states. All 50 states and
several territories have signed an interstate compact that pro-
vides support to transitioning military families.
The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Mili-
tary Children provides state commitment to support transitioning
military children in the areas of Enrollment, Eligibility, and Gradu-
ation.
The Department of Defense Education Activity is not a state and
therefore cannot become a signatory, however it has pledged to
meet the expectations laid out in the compact and has signed an
MOA with the DOD.
The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3)
has established a website to keep military families abreast of up-
dates and how they can rely on the compact provisions to sup-
port their transitioning students.
