Remynse Elementary

Some schools rally around their mascot or favorite sport , but at Remnyse Elementary the school takes great pride in its garden .
The Remynse garden has become a point of school spirit and pride , and on April 2 , more than 50 students , parents and staff members volunteered to support the school and work on the schoolwide garden project .
The garden was started three years ago by Ellen Ravkind and Lisa Spencer , and each year , the staff and students search for ways to improve and enrich the garden . This year , volunteers replaced and installed new garden beds , shoveled and raked soil , and pulled weeds to prepare the garden for classrooms to plant seeds and plants .
New additions for this year include a raised garden bed for wheelchair-bound students and a fairy garden . The raised garden bed will provide easier access for planting and caring for plants for all students . The fairy garden is a miniature mobile garden in a planter with a collection of plants and structures , and it includes an adorable fairy and gnome .
The fairy garden is designed for classrooms to use as an indoor garden that all students participate in caring for . The figurines and structure components are placed in the garden to inspire students to write creative stories about the daily adventures of the fictional characters .
Remynse staff members have found that the school garden is a way to help children identify with their school and to feel proud of their own individual contributions .
