School District & Administration Opportunities Abound at AISD Event By Bruce L. Nunes The inaugural Opportunity AISD event was a huge success with parents and students coming out to learn all about the unique programs the Arlington Independent School District have to offer. Despite heavy rains that evening, the event still took place with students from all over the district coming to see what AISD had to offer. No room went to waste as program showcases were lifted for display from fine arts to advanced academics. Professionals and interns gave their time to educate students and parents alike of the many opportunities available in the AISD. “The AISD has wonderful programs to provide kids with the opportunity to learn and experience,” said Fort Worth symphony musician and AISD student’s mother Xiao Sheng. “And what we have here really goes to show that.” program seeks to mold minds for the professional world. The AVID campus coordinator at Shackelford Junior High, Karla Hill, went into more detail as for the reasons behind the program and to whom this may pertain. “A good number of our kids will be first generation college students,” Hill said. “It is designed for students who are in pre-AP classes but who are struggling or the ones who are in academic classes and making straight As.” This year marks the first go for many new programs as well. One such program is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy, which is designed to prepare younger students for college in the aforementioned fields of study.
