Key Elementary
Celebrating 40 Years
Key Elementary School, named in honor of Harold W. and
Lucy Key, opened its doors in 1975 and has been housing
great teachers teaching amazing students for 40 years. Mr.
and Mrs. Key together have a total of 40 years of education
in the AISD, and their legacy continues at Key Elementary.
On Dec. 3. many people came to celebrate the anniversary
of Key Elementary, including current and former students,
parents and staff. Key has had five principals in the 40-year
history, and all five of them were in attendance along with
Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, Chief Academic
Officer Dr. Steven Wurtz, Area Superintendent Dr. Melissa
Haubrich and Director of Communications Leslie Johnston.
Eddie Mayhugh was the first principal of Key Elementary,
opening the doors in 1975 and remaining principal until
1993. Susan Frye was the next principal serving Key until
1996. Then, Gayla Shannon took the reins from 1996
through 1999. Next, Debbie Chumchal led the charge at
Key until 2012, when Tiffany Jackson became the principal.
The school choir performed at the celebration, and Jason
Toone, Student Council president, read the history of Mr.
and Mrs. Key before he introduced Mayhugh. Principal
Jackson also spoke to the audience before inviting everyone
to the library for the reception.
The evening was a wonderful way to celebrate the
achievements and people who have been a part of the
history of Key Elementary. Everyone is looking forward
to the next 40 or more years. †
