group chose a familiar song but added
choreography, which had these young
men smiling and laughing and dancing
in unison to the delight of the audience
members. Here were these seventh and
eighth grade boys, who could barely
muster a shoulder shrug or a mumbled
groan in response to questions from
their parents most days, dancing like no
one was watching and clearly enjoying
every second of it. The response from
parents after this show was the same
one I have heard for many years, “How
does he get those boys to do that?”
Baptist University confirmed that
calling, and I found myself immersed
in choirs under the direction of Stephen
Holcomb, from whom I learned many
things about being a complete choir
director. Not complete in the sense
that I’m a world class conductor, but
