#AISD What’s happening around the district Students and staff at Adams Elementary celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss in style with hats, outfits, door decorations and more. The Thornton Elementary chess team had great success in a recent chess tournament in Lewisville. The fourth- through sixth-grade U500 team won its fourth-consecutive title. In addition, the fourth- through sixth-grade unrated team finished second while the kindergarten through third-grade U500 team finished third. The fourth- through sixth-grade open team also finished third at the tournament in Lewisville. The teams are sponsored by Andrew Walley and Patricia Walley. Webb Elementary recently completed its third annual Earn, Save, Spend and Donate Project, collecting more than $1,200 along with items donated by teachers and staff. A few staff members and extended Webb family members met over spring break to shop for critical needs items to donate to the Arlington Life Shelter. Boles Junior High celebrated its 30th anniversary during Celebrate Texas Public Schools Week with an open house and reception that welcomed former teachers, students and principals. Miller Elementary held the 20th annual Arlington Fire Department and Arlington Police Department vs. sixth graders basketball game the Friday before spring break. Amazingly, Miller sixth graders won for the 20th year in a row. The Dunn Elementary fourth graders took home the gold medal during the recent Battle of the Books competition at the Professional Development Center. Butler Elementary held its first chess invitational, and teams from Foster, Goodman, Moore and Thornton elementaries participated. The competition was for first through sixth graders playing in grade-level groups, and the top five finishers in each group received trophies. Read Around Roark was a bi g success with several special guests, including Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos and Congressman Marc Veasey reading to students. Congratulations to the Arlington High School cheerleaders for finishing first in the high school novice division at the Contest of Champions National Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort.
