Arizona Reined Cow Horse News A s anticipated, the 8th Annual SGM Spectacular was the biggest show yet with a total of 73 entries! The extreme heat and wind in Temecula raised some concerns for our event but nothing stopped cow horsers from making the trip from as far away as Montana. Actually the weather was more like Arizona weather than that of California but by show time temperatures were on a down turn: Day 1 of the herd work. All the action did not disappoint. High Score on the Herd Work after day 1, Open: Phillip Ralls riding Dom Dualuise owed by Christian C. Larson with a 74, NonPro: Christa Hampton riding her horse TR Spooky Cat with a 72. also won an Usher buckle sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Mike Gilkerson, a check for $2,970.00 and a saddle sponsored by Stray Dog Saddles, The Trainers and The Nutro Company. Added money of $5,000 was sponsored by Linda Mars and Pedigree Pet Foods. The practice pen had the biggest excitement of the day when Bob Grant of Camp Verde, AZ had a horse accident breaking 4 ribs! By late afternoon he was back at the show grounds all cleaned up and enjoying the party! Amazing! Thank you to all who assisted Bob when he needed a hand! Friday also saw the conclusion of the Open and Ltd Open Hackamore Spectacular. Winning the Open was Onetimeatbandcamp ridden by Corey Cushing with a total of 221.5, the horse is owned by Allan Kaplan. Reserve Champion was Shadd Parkinson riding Smoking Red Pepper owned by Sue Schmitz with a score of 219.5. The Limited Open was won by Let’s Go Commando, owned by Bob and Becky Grant. Due to Bob’s accident earlier in the day Trapper Rodgers stepped aboard and showed Lets Go Commando finishing with a score of 205.5. Reserve Champion was Erika Lynn Roberts riding Tru Grrit for Beverly Vaughn who also had the third place horse in this class as well. NAME OF HORSE? Great job Erika! Saturday dawned with cooler temperatures. We have to take this opportunity to again thank SCRCHA for working with us to combine these two shows for a great weekend. All our competitors showed their very best and awaited the annual BBQ for results and awards. Thank you to Casner Ranch manager Cookie LAST NAME? for having the BBQ area all dressed up and ready to party. The BBQ was hosted by AZRCHA, SCRCHA and Linda Mars of Pedigree Pet Foods. This year it was complete with a real Chuck Wagon and cook. Another fine meal was served and enjoyed as all waited to hear the final results. Debbie Hotaling and Mindy Barkemeyer were the emcees of the evening with assistance from the little Barkemeyer men. We were very pleased to have Sherri’s dad, Jack Hammond and sister, Julie Hodge for Wyoming in attendance as well as Marc’s mom and dad, Mr. & Mrs. Mike Gilkerson from Montana. We were pleased to present the high score dry work and and fence work awards. WHAT ABOUT HERD WORK? Dry work Open: Onetimeatbandcamp and Corey Cushing , Non-Pro was Shawn Renshaw and Genny’s Prize. Open Cow Work was Tucker’s Smart Cat and Lyn Anderson with, get this, a 76.00! Non-Pro winner was Lori Conrow and her horse Playing Skeets. Great job guys and girls! The winners are listed below but all results are available on the AZRCHA and SCRCHA web sites. For the third time the winner of the Open was Lyn Anderson riding Tuckers Smart Cat owned by David and Barbara Archer. Lyn commented that this is her favorite event every year. It was with great pride that she received The Perpetual Trophy. This trophy consists of Sherri’s actual boots and donated by Marc Gilkerson, Colt Bruegman and Hܛ
