Gordon’s Feed & Seed
What a Feed Store Should Be
Story by Vicki Szaszvari
I
f you’ve lived in the Valley for a while, you’ve driven past
Gordon’s Feed and Seed on Broadway just east of 7th Avenue.
If you’ve never been inside, you owe it to yourself to experience
what a feed store should be.
“We go in and are instantly overwhelmed with the masses. Stuff...
more stuff... and even more stuff... everywhere. I came in with
specific needs and they met most of them. But once they realized
that hadn’t met one... they were on a mission to meet it. I left my
name and number and they are going to call me when (and if)
they can get what I so desire in. The staff is so incredibly kind
and friendly. Very family oriented. At the time we were there,
a grandma and grandson were working, addressing each other
exactly as that.”
This is an accurate description of Gordon’s from a Yelp review
by Megan from Chicago. A second reviewer, Ashley, says, “I will
avoid going to a pet store now that I have found Gordon’s. I have
been coming here for the past year and I have never had a bad
experience. I have a dog with a lot of allergies and they always help
me out on medicine, creams, and food. There isn’t a place you can
get this quality of information or service in town for your animals.
The prices are very reasonable.”
The store looks small from the street, but inside you’ll find that it’s
well-stocked not only with feed items, but also a large quantity of
horse tack, from western bridles and halters to blankets and bits.
It smells wonderfully of leather and grain inside, where you can
get vet supplies, vaccines, and good advice from a family that has
specialized in customer service for over forty years.
Mary and her husband Gordon Reagan opened Gordon’s in 1970.
According to Mary, “Owning a feed store was something that
Gordon wanted.
“We owned a fish and chips, and he kept talking about opening up
a feed store. And I kept thinking he’s crazy. He just happened to be
driving down Broadway one day in 1969, and there was a big FOR
RENT sign on this building. He came back home and said,
“I found the place for us to open our feed store.”
