FOUNDER OF ANIMAL RESCUE DESPERATE FOR A SERVICE DOG OF HER OWN Director of Four Peaks Rescue appeals to community in quest for Diabetic Alert Dog N ancy Borkowicz is the Founder and Director of Four Peaks Animal Rescue. She spends her days working tirelessly to save those among us who have no voice; rescued and abandoned animals of all shapes and sizes. Her no-kill organization lovingly rehabilitates these desperate animals and then teaches them the basic behavior skills they need to be placed in their loving, forever homes. After years of dedicated and selfless service, however, it is Nancy who now needs help. 31 years ago Nancy was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (previously known as Juvenile Diabetes). In Type 1 Diabetes the body does not produce enough insulin, the hormone needed to convert carbohydrates, starches and other food into the energy needed for daily life. Nancy has successfully managed her diabetes for years through insulin injections and, more recently, via an insulin pump. However, even the most meticulous management of diabetes can leave a person at risk for dangerously high or low blood sugar levels. When blood sugar drops too low it can cause seizures, brain damage, erratic or irrational behavior, loss of consciousness, or even death. While most people with Type 1 Diabetes can feel warning signs when their blood sugar is dropping (symptoms include nausea, shaking, sweating & confusion), unfortunately Nancy no longer can, a condition called “Hypoglycemic Unawareness”. This condition is particularly dangerous for Nancy because she lives alone. “I fear that, because I live alone, I may not wake up one morning due to a dangerously low drop in blood sugar.” Nancy said. Nancy has been accepted into the Power Paws program (www.AZPowerPaws.org) to be matched with, and trained alongside, a Diabetic Alert Dog. Nancy’s canine partner will be trained to smell the chemical body changes that occur as her sugar levels increase or drop and save her by alerting her long before any adverse medical reactions occur. In order to participate, Nancy must raise the needed funds by December 29, 2014. Please join with us in helping Nancy raise the funds needed to participate in the Power Paws program. Every dollar helps and will go directly to Nancy for her service dog training, and the eventual placement of a Power Paws dog in her home.
