parts department. The service
department does an amazing job with
complete disassembly, repairs, and
reassembly of these machines in a very
short period of time.”
Smith takes pride in Arnold’s Silver
Service® that particularly benefits his
mining customers in remote parts of
Nevada. “Freight deliveries are a frequent
and often costly problem for these
customers,” Smith says. “Recently,
Robinson Nevada Mining Company in Ely,
Nevada had several lost and/or delayed
shipments that impacted their repair
schedules, and subsequently their
production output. We met with them,
and offered to make deliveries on a
weekly basis at no direct cost to the mine
site. They now have an
ensured schedule in
which they can plan
their repair work with
confidence, and have
subsequently reduced
their associated freight
costs.”
Most of Smith’s
career has been in the mining equipment
business. Although he was born in Ohio,
Smith was raised in the Phoenix area. His
first job in the industry was with the Road
Machinery Company in Phoenix in 1971.
A friend who worked for Arnold
Machinery Company tried recruiting Larry
for open jobs in Elko for years, but he
always replied no. In 2011, he finally met
with Arnold Machinery Company’s
management about a position in Elko.
Larry was impressed with the interview
process, the people, the business and
management philosophies of the
company, and the emphasis on customer
support called Silver Service®. After the
interview his decision to join the
company in Elko was made – one he
wishes he would have made years ago.
Being familiar with the Tucson area,
and having family who
live there, Larry and his
family are looking
forward to the move.

opportunity to help
develop the new mining
branch in the Tucson location, and
working with the mines in Arizona.” He

Away from the job, Smith likes to
wind down by reading political, military,
and espionage-related fiction books,
devouring several a week. “I’m an avid
gardener too, growing produce that my
wife, Lisa, cans and puts up for our use,”
Smith says.
In the 26th year of their marriage,
Smith and his wife are raising a 15-yearold granddaughter. “We all love camping
on weekends,” Smith says. “And I still get
an opportunity every once in a while to
go surfing in San Diego with my daughter
and her family.”
