Need of justice and dignity, by Tahar Benjelloun
«Our need for consolation is insatiable» wrote the
Swedish Stig Dagerman, who committed suicide in November 1954. We could also claim that cry. But we need
more justice and dignity than consolation. Because our
history is increasingly written into violence.
First of all, let’s clarify the facts by being honest with
ourselves: the Arab world as a global entity, diverse and
similar does not exist. There are states, countries, communities that share a traditional language spoken by an
elite, a common religion practiced according to various
rites, and a constant made of tears and divisions. The
Arabs are not united or organized amongst themselves
and never have faced their opponents with one voice,
strong and determined. This situation desperates people
in their majority and of course arrange the enemies of
what is Arab, and by enxtension Muslim.
To understand what is happening today in most Arab
countries, we must go back to 1952 when Egyptian officers seized power in a coup d’Etat. This practice became common. Hafez al-Assad as Gaddafi proceeded in
the same way to seize power and crush all opposition of
their people and any attempt to establish a democratic
system (...)
