April often gets a bad rap. The month is best known for
Fools, Taxes, and Showers. Even Easter Sunday spends
about 25% of its time in March. April can be volatile as it sets up
for the summer. This year, however, it looks like April may have let
March have all the transitional fun and could be working to take
the fishing spotlight away from May. While I doubt we’ve seen all
of Mother Nature’s weather challenges for this spring, fishing conditions are setting up nicely and already showing promise.

Coastal areas affected by high Mississippi
River levels earlier in the year all seem to be
clearing themselves of the fresh water intrusion. Some areas remained muddy even after river levels dropped due to high
winds, heavy rain run off, and at
one point, exceptionally low
water levels. When the
weather calms a bit,
those areas are
cleaning up nicely and
showing signs of life. Brown shrimp are
showing up more and more, and most of
the marinas that stock live bait are beginning to get a consistent supply. We saw a
mid-month surge of salt water move into

most of our estuaries. Salinity levels are

water temperatures warm for this time of
year. While Mother Nature usually uses more “lion” than “lamb”
when she brings spring to Louisiana, conditions are setting up for
an early return of consistent speckled trout fishing.
You’re no fool, if
you’re fishing this
month!
