The BigFish Finder April often gets a bad rap. The month is best known for Fools, Taxes, and Showers. Even Easter Sunday spends about 25% of its time in March. April can be volatile as it sets up for the summer. This year, however, it looks like April may have let March have all the transitional fun and could be working to take the fishing spotlight away from May. While I doubt we’ve seen all of Mother Nature’s weather challenges for this spring, fishing conditions are setting up nicely and already showing promise. Current Conditions from leftCapt. Coastal areas affected by high Mississippi River levels earlier in the year all seem to be clearing themselves of the fresh water intrusion. Some areas remained muddy even after river levels dropped due to high winds, heavy rain run off, and at one point, exceptionally low water levels. When the weather calms a bit, those areas are cleaning up nicely and showing signs of life. Brown shrimp are showing up more and more, and most of the marinas that stock live bait are beginning to get a consistent supply. We saw a mid-month surge of salt water move into by Capt. CT Williams most of our estuaries. While Mother Nature usually uses more “lion” than “lamb” when she brings spring to Louisiana, conditions are setting up for an early return of consistent speckled trout fishing.
