“…one day, not today, not now, we will be gone

from this earth where we know the gladiolas.”

Kingdom Animalia by Aracelis Girmay

But until then, I want the lights from the window

to be bright.

I want the madeleines first,

an armful of daffodils the brightest day

of spring.

I want it to be time

when I make the great move, to have known love

at the level of my feet.

I am singing this song

to myself. I want to write the words right this time:

the dogs off leash, wind against face,

a gentle beholding of my one heart

in collaboration.

Before leaving, let me touch

the pink petals of morning and brim

over with the sun.

Let me remember this melody. I hope

I am listening.
