Arlington, Texas Police Department
In December of 2017, The
Force and Tactics Assessment Unit
was created. This newly formed
unit will be responsible for force
and defensive tactics training. In
addition, the unit will review a ll
use of force reports and produce
analysis related to force topics to
guide the organization. Trends will
be analyzed to assist with training
topics with a focus on de-escalation
of field encounters when feasible.
In 2017, all officers attending
mandatory in-service received
16-hours of Crisis Intervention
training. The mentally ill population
is a vulnerable segment within the
community and the department
trains officers to properly identify
and assess individuals to ensure
they are receiving appropriate
services based upon their needs.
Patrol officers are routinely the
first line of response for situations
involving mentally ill persons.
The end goal is to increase the
likelihood of a beneficial outcome
during interactions for the mentally
ill person, the public and officers
with the least amount of force
utilized.
