Support Operations Bureau Training Center • The department instituted a Force and Tactics Assessment Unit at the end of 2017. • There were 2,559 firearm qualifications and over 2,585 hours of in-service training provided last year. • The Training Center hosted several specialized training schools. The Training Center is responsible for all departmental training including new recruit instruction and annual in-service training topics for employees. Over 2,585 hours of in-service instruction was provided during employee continuing education. There were also 2,559 firearm qualifications conducted last year. Specialized training schools included special event command school, hostage negotiations, SWAT training, bicycle, mounted patrol, and Rescue Taskforce training. Arlington, Texas Police Department In December of 2017, The Force and Tactics Assessment Unit was created. This newly formed unit will be responsible for force and defensive tactics training. In addition, the unit will review a ll use of force reports and produce analysis related to force topics to guide the organization. Trends will be analyzed to assist with training topics with a focus on de-escalation of field encounters when feasible. In 2017, all officers attending mandatory in-service received 16-hours of Crisis Intervention training. The mentally ill population is a vulnerable segment within the community and the department trains officers to properly identify and assess individuals to ensure they are receiving appropriate services based upon their needs. Patrol officers are routinely the first line of response for situations involving mentally ill persons. The end goal is to increase the likelihood of a beneficial outcome during interactions for the mentally ill person, the public and officers with the least amount of force utilized. 49
