Support Operations Bureau Special Events Unit • The unit reviewed 153 special event requests in 2017. • There were 211 total events planned where the unit handled staffing, logistics and prepared public safety plans. • Planning for the development of Texas Live and the Texas Rangers new home continues. The Homeland Security/Special Events Unit is tasked with reviewing all requests that come into the department for special events. The unit completed a transition to a new off-duty staffing software program that facilitates easier scheduling for officers assigned to special events. Funding for neighborhood integrity teams was accomplished with coordination with the Dallas Cowboys to ensure neighborhoods are not adversely impacted during stadium events. Arlington, Texas Police Department During 2017, the unit organized and implemented a command school for stadium events to assist commanders with roles and responsibilities. In all, 17 commanders attended the tabletop exercise that included topics such as disaster preparedness during events. The unit also assisted with Enchant Texas, a holiday event that boasts the world’s largest Christmas light maze. Officers were responsible for the safety and security of tourists attending the holiday event. The Auxiliary Mounted Unit consists of six officers and a sergeant. The unit participated in 65 events across the community including National Night Out, All Cops Rodeo at the Will Rogers Center in Fort Worth, the Joey Cushman 5K Run, and many other events. The unit is a huge hit from kids to adults alike. Officers in the unit volunteer for this assignment as an auxiliary duty and hold other full-time positions within the department. 47
