Overall, the district arrested several offenders and was able to clear major cases to improve quality of life for residents and visitors. The South retail area is the largest economic engine for the City of Arlington. The district has a dedicated unit that patrols and responds to calls at the Parks at Arlington Mall and the Arlington Highlands retail area. On October 31, 2017, the district held its annual Trunk or Treat event which welcomed over 1,500 kids and parents. The recurring event affords citizens an opportunity to get to know their district officers and learn about the department. From equipment demos to Halloween goodies, everyone was all smiles at the event. Each year, the department creates a holiday traffic and safety plan to ensure efficient traffic flow throughout the commercial Annual Report 2017 corridors and the safety of all visitors shopping at retail locations. Department staff contributed thousands of hours in public safety in order to achieve a safe holiday period within the retail areas. From traffic direction utilizing off- duty officers to proactive patrols looking for those who may try and take advantage of shoppers, the district’s efforts were praised by mall management and community members.
