Field Operations Bureau SouthDistrict The South Patrol District is responsible for the largest land area in Arlington. In addition, major retail corridors are patrolled to ensure the city’s economic “vault” is protected based upon the amount of sales tax revenue that is generated. Included in these areas is the Parks at Arlington, reported to be the 5th largest mall in the country. The Arlington Highlands, an open air mall environment, also receives law enforcement services from the South District. must feel safe while shopping and dining in Arlington. There is a dedicated section of officers housed in the South Retail District Unit (SRDU) that focuses solely on these vibrant business areas. SRDU patrols the business districts in cars, on bicycles, and foot patrols. Many departments try to replicate the foundational pieces that make this unit so successful. Protecting this economic engine is vital to retaining good businesses and returning shoppers to our retail and restaurant areas. By reducing crime in our major retail areas, businesses will continue to invest in Arlington. Citizens and visitors A special focus on apprehending violent crime repeat offenders was accomplished last year. Officers monitored known criminals through social media and took effective enforcement action when criminal acts were committed. The department also worked with the U.S. Marshal’s Office to identify the most prolific offenders and remove them from our streets. The first annual Trunk or Treat Halloween event was held at the South District Police Substation with over 600 citizens in attendance. This provided an opportunity for families with kids to meet officers while at the same time receiving a Halloween treat from Arlington’s finest. 29
