Crime Prevention Unit This unit assists the department with community outreach efforts. The mission of the Crime Prevention Unit is to foster an educational and informative relationship with the community, divisions within the Arlington Police Department, and other regional law enforcement agencies. • Added 14 new Community Watch Groups growing the total to 211 • Coordinated 148 Citizens On Patrol representatives • Oversight of 99 Citizen On Patrol Mobile participants • Organized National Night Out which included 140 parties throughout the city Victim Services Unit The Victim Services Unit provides services to victims and family members with the goal of lessening the short and long-term trauma experienced as a direct result of victimization. Licensed counselors provide crisis counseling services, crisis intervention, criminal justice support and advocacy, referrals, assistance with Crime Victims Compensation claims, and other services to persons who are victimized. • Staffing includes 1 coordinator, 1 supervisor, 1 youth and family specialist and 6 counselors who have master’s degrees in social work or mental health • 3 team members are fluent in Spanish and 1 speaks fluent Vietnamese • Assisted 12,508 victims Media Office The award-winning media office guides the department’s internal and external communication products. This includes conducting interviews with news outlets, managing website content and producing marketing materials for the department. The unit also boasts a robust social media outreach philosophy designed to connect directly with residents. • Issued 108 news releases • Facebook – 12,000+ Likes • Twitter – 14,000+ Followers • YouTube – 400,000+ Views • Nixle – 4,000+ Subscribers • Live Chat sessions – 1,838 • Hosts bi-weekly Inside APD television show • Produces monthly “On Call” newsletter to public 23
