JOB I HAD BEFORE ENTERING THE APARTMENT INDUSTRY: Market Analyst for a telecom
company FAVORITE “NEW” RESTAURANT: Seasons 52 DREAM TICKETS: Symphony
tickets OFFICE SOUNDTRACK: “Taking Care of Business” AMENITY YOU’D LIKE
TO INVENT: An interactive home management system. You would tell
the wall mounted system to set the thermostat at X, turn on the
alarm when you leave, unlock the back door for Sparky at X, turn
the lights off and on at X, etc... ATTRIBUTES YOU LOOK FOR IN NEW EMPLOYEE?
Comfortable demeanor, experience managing multiple employees,
strong financial and Excel knowledge. “GO-TO” INTERVIEW QUESTION? Tell
me about your humanistic approach to managing your employees
and their relationships with each other and residents. BEST DECISION
LAST SIX MONTHS? Good promotion and hiring decisions HOW DO YOU KEEP
WORK FUN FOR YOUR TEAM? I’m goofy with them and I make sure they
understand it’s OK to be fun and be yourself at work PROFESSIONAL
PET PEEVE? People that are too rigid or too professional and lack the
human touch.

*Since Dinosaurs Roamed the Earth
JOB I HAD BEFORE ENTERING THE APARTMENT INDUSTRY: Dinosaur Wrangler. Before
that I was in the restaurant and lounge business and disc jockey
FAVORITE “NEW” RESTAURANT: My restaurant tastes are quite pedestrian after
working in the steakhouse world. Like Panda Express and Texas
Roadhouse pedestrian. Of course, give me a dark sports bar, cold
beer and hot nachos and I will give you nirvana. DREAM TICKETS: A
Super Bowl with the Broncos AND halftime entertainment by Led
Zepplin (1972 version please, not the wrinkly, fat, overpaid, over
drugged, walking skeletons of rock and roll excess that exists now)
OFFICE SOUNDTRACK: “What is Hip” – Tower of Power, 1973. Sometimes
of course its “Fantastic Voyage” – Lakeside, 1980. But never “Dust
in the Wind” – Kansas, 1977. AMENITY YOU’D LIKE TO INVENT: A transporter
of course. Beam me to Apartment 201 Scotty, pick up the packages
while you’re at it, and make it snappy. WHEN WILL THE DOW BREAK 20,000?
August 1, 2016, just before plummeting to Nixon era numbers
under 1000 with the imminent coronation, I mean election, of Hillary.
WHEN WILL METRO DENVER RENT BE OVER $1200, $1300? With the rent-control inducing
high priced new construction units flooding the market, we might
already be over $1200, but certainly by the end of the first quarter
2015. Gradual market softening will push $1300 well into 2018.
ATTRIBUTES YOU LOOK FOR IN NEW EMPLOYEE? Positive attitude, flexibility, attitude,
creativity, attitude, a sense of “street smarts”, and the ability to
think like an owner. Did I mention a good attitude is top of the list
for me? “GO-TO” INTERVIEW QUESTION? “How can I talk you out of this Job?”
Seriously, in this market candidates are interviewing you as much
as you are interviewing them. This is the kind of question that
tempers expectations, but makes them understand you are serious
and they should be serious about this before wasting everyone’s
time. BEST DECISION LAST SIX MONTHS? Asking my wife to marry me all over
again. Oh, and buying that good lookin’ Tacoma I mentioned
earlier. WORST DECISION LAST SIX MONTHS? Not being aggressive enough
with rent increases. And my under bet on the over/under for Super
Bowl XLVIII. PROFESSIONAL PET PEEVE? Resident vs. resident disputes.
And unnecessary reply to all email chains. I HATE that…
