Apartment Week Successes and Ushering in the Maintenance Apprenticeship Program

AAMD packaged up open house kits for its participating properties using the NAAEI “ Real Communities , Real Careers ” theme and collateral materials , which was showcased in all of AAMD ’ s initiatives including a TV and internet campaign .

The campaign received media coverage and AAMD volunteers appeared on Colorado and Company , an Emmy Award winning local sales / magazine show . Last month , we had something else to celebrate ! AAMD was awarded a grant from the State of Colorado to help with outreach and requirement efforts to bring new talent to the maintenance profession . AAMD has crafted a new program called MAP ( Maintenance Apprenticeship Program ) where newly recruited talent will be trained over a 6 week program . In partnership with Emily Griffith Technical College , MAP will put students through 48 hours of school hands-on maintenance training . In addition , students must complete a minimum of 96 hours on-site training through a paid internship . MAP has been designed to train and equip maintenance professionals with the skills specifically needed for the multifamily industry . Students will learn skills such as interior and exterior maintenance , HVAC , plumbing and appliance repair .
The AAMD and NAA invested more than $ 70,000 and have developed a scholarship fund to pay for 100 student ’ s tuition . We are offering candidates a ‘ career on a platter ’; they will receive free tuition , a paid internship and a career path upon completion ! According to the 1st Quarter 2017 Apartment Insight Construction report , there are 27,187 apartments under construction . This report illustrates the dramatic increase in the number of apartments being built in Denver and the subsequent need for new Maintenance personnel . Based on this report , it is estimated that 302 new maintenance jobs will need to be filled by the end of 2018 . MAP will meet close to a third of that need .
So , what ’ s next ? What can you do to help and ensure MAP is a success ? This program depends on the 96-hour paid internship through industry partners . AAMD needs commitments from Property Management companies that are willing to participate and host internship opportunities .
