Apartment Association meet with
Policymakers in Washington D.C.

everal Association members attended the 2015
National Apartment Association’s Capitol Conference in Washington, D.C. to discuss pertinent industry issues with our elected officials. The annual
Capitol Conference presents up-to-the-minute information
on federal legislative issues and their implications as it relates
to the multifamily industry. It also provides attendees an
opportunity to meet and discuss industry concerns with our
Colorado Congressional delegates on Capitol Hill. This year’s
issues included Tax Reform, streamlining the Section 8
voucher program, and immigration reform.
This year, Pat Hutchison of Mission Rock Residential,
Carrie Gillis of FranGillis, Dori Locke of McWhinney,
Terry Simone of BluSky Restoration, Rocky Sundling of
Greystar, Dave Woodward of CompassRock and Meredith
Wright of Mission Rock Residential joined Apartment Association staff, Nancy Burke, Vice President of Government
Affairs and Luke Miller, Government Affairs Manager, in
representing Association members of the Apartment Association of Metro Denver and the Colorado Apartment
Association.

On Wednesday, March 18th, members met with United
States Representative Ed Perlmutter (CD-7), Representative
Mike Coffman (CD-6), and Representative Ken Buck (CD4). Members from the Apartment Association of Southern
Colorado met with U.S. Representatives Scott Tipton (CD3) and Doug Lamborn (CD-5).
Our members discussed tax code reform focused preserving 1031, like-kind exchanges. In order to continue growth,
investors must have the ability to utilize every tool available.
Each member of Congress and their staff understood the
importance of this tool.

Immigration reform was also highlighted. Members
discussed industry concerns regarding unwanted and unnecessary burdens on industry property managers to serve as
“police” in immigration reform as well as the need for more
laborers in the construction of new multifamily builds.
Another point of discussion centered on the reformation
of the Section 8 voucher program. Members stressed the
importance of keeping this program voluntary and the need
to streamline to attract more participants.
