This inaugural publication of APAdemic is a by product of a course in Cultural Literacy here at The Academy for the Performing Arts of The University of Trinidad and Tobago. The brain child of Chanzo Greenidge PhD, this publication was originally conceived of as an alumni relations tool. With the first graduating class of Bachelor students about to step out in to the world, I thought this would be the most opportune moment to pounce on the idea.
The Cultural Literacy Course is meant to encourage students to survey the richness of cultural happenings all round us and to interact with them in a more meaningful and self aware manner - to observe more and question more. What better way to do this than to ask them to make a magazine? I issued the challenge, the young men and women answered the call and have decided that their magazine will serve to cover the vast array of performing arts activity being carried out by themselves, their colleagues and their instructors both on and off campus. In some cases the coverage of these activities serves as a conduit to further comment on the wider performing arts community in the country and indeed is meant to help us find a place for the performing artist within the wider community.
We trust that you will receive the work of these students in the context of what it is, not a commercial publication. but rather an outlet for these young people to become more aware of all that surrounds them, more aware of how it all impacts on them and more aware of how they can impact on it all. Congratulations Ladies and Gentlemen, you've done a fine job, I trust this journey has had the effect on you it was meant to and that the fruits of your labour will be well received.
