The 2016 Research Symposium offered 12 research presentations and featured more than 25 lead researchers.

This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Alan Ewert, addressed the importance of having a nexus between research and practice. As part of his keynote address, he shared some preliminary results on research that examined the use of biomarkers as a means of better understanding the effects and benefits that certain outdoor adventure experiences could have on a person. Findings from this line of research can provide us all with additional evidence from which we can advocate for the efficacy of the outdoor recreation and education experiences we desire to offer our participants. Funding provided by the AORE helped to make this research possible and reaffirms AORE’s commitment to bridge the gap between research and practice. That commitment continues to remain resolute as funding for 2017 has been awarded for another industry-serving research project.

As we further contemplate the relationship between research and practice, it is important for us to recognize that rigor and relevance need not be separate conceptions. Each are equally important in co-producing knowledge and practice that will lead to informed action. The R&P and the AORE are excited about the moves that have been made to foster the important and dynamic relationship between these two activities. With continued effort and devotion to this cause, we are confident that we will continue to make strides in coupling research and practice so that such efforts serve a broad audience and have a meaningful impact on the industry as a whole.
