Research on Growth in Foals
to Improve their Nutrition
Zootechnical Engineer Ariel G. Pellegrini
Within the framework of the XI Equine Production
Update Conference, organized by the Chair of
Equine Technology (FCA, UNLZ) held in October
last year at the Palermo facilities (CABA) of the
Cavalry Horse Supply Administrative Office
(Dirección de Remonta y Veterinaria), among other
issues of interest discussed in relation to equine
production, was that of the factors affecting growth
in foals and specifically related to their nutrition.
For a start, it is essential that the production system
be defined, since this will depend on the breed,
type of sporting activity, sales calendar, breeders’
own management and other external factors of
each site.
When raising a modern sport horse it is necessary
to obtain, in most cases, a product that shows
precocity in its physical and morphological

development. These demanding goals lead to
intensification of foal and yearling processes in
stud farms, through greater operative and feeding
processes.
