We spoke with the owner of Doña Sofía about how he started breeding; his relationship
with Cambiaso and how he sees the future with all the progress brought on by cloning.
“Daniel, when exactly did you start thinking
about becoming a breeder?”
“Martín Barrantes approached me with a
cloning proposal and it was immediate. It was
inconceivable to me to think of cloning and not
breeding.”
“In those days, was the possibility of cloning
something you thought about?”
“It had never occurred to me. Business
proposals of all sorts had always been brought
to my attention, but never cloning.”
“What were the first steps you took to begin
the process and what genetics did you start
with?”
“I made up my mind to choose the best genetics
available in the market of La Dolfina; Ellerstina;
Los Machitos and American bloodlines.”
“Why at that stage did you choose Luna,
Ilusión, Cumbia and Simpática? What can
you tell us about those mares?”
“We sought our foundation stock based on these
very confirmed bloodlines. There is no question
