Summer FREE 2014 Plantar Another Fasciitis Third Issue View Orillia By Jason vanMeijel This inflammation is often triggered by excessive tension in our calf muscles... Published by The Waterview Space During the hot, sultry months of summer, many of us will have a brief tryst with running; weak to its promises of weight loss, improved cardiovascular function and the endorphin high that comes with exercise. For some this affair is brief, for others the affair continues, sneaking out in the morning or late at night to get one more run in. Natural Health & Wellness Magazine The end result for many is the same… a nasty pain in the bottom of your foot which abruptly ends the love affair. What’s going on? Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia; a band of connective tissue running from our heel to the front of our foot. This tissue supports the arch of the foot, giving it shape and aiding in stability. This inflammation is often triggered by excessive tension Inside this issue: in our calf muscles which connect via the Achilles tendon to the heel bone. Pulling from the calves stretches the fascia and causes strain. A mild case can turn severe quickly as inflammation makes the fascia more prone to micro tears which can lead to debilitating pain, some cases lasting months. The good news is that our love affair can be saved and continue with a little intervention. Employ dynamic rest, the sooner you take a break from the offending activity the better. Stretch the calves and the bottom of your foot often; go slow and remember you’re trying to relieve tightness in the area. Ease yourself back into running and avoid strenuous lower-body activity until you are pain free. If symptoms don’t improve in about two weeks, make an appointment with a registered massage therapist or ARTTM certified chiropractor. ■ Jason vanMeijel, RMT, ART Soft Tissue Specialist Registered Massage Therapist Active Release Techniques.
