Mental Potential By Kelsang Oden With time and faithful practice, a balanced mind develops that is light, flexible and happy. the seeds of today. Peace of mind - it’s something we all want, but it remains elusive. How is this? Misguidedly, we link peace to outer conditions, thinking, “When the kids pipe down, when colleagues quit whining, when those neighbours turn the music down... THEN, I’ll be at peace!” We are convinced peace lies ‘out there’: in vacations, wealth or a quiet household. But if we get these, our mind still churns – planning, worrying, finding fault and we’re back where we started; restless, agitated and disturbed. “Buddha taught that real peace never comes from external sources – whether a sunset, a UN Resolution, or an anti-noise law. Meditation, however, is a true source of inner peace,” explains Gen Kelsang Suma, Resident Teacher at Barrie’s Jampa Ling Kadampa Buddhist Centre. Meditation aims to make the mind calm and peaceful. A mind free of worry and mental disquiet lets us glimpse authentic happiness. Without peace of mind, happiness can’t grow, even in luxurious surroundings or a tropical setting. With time and faithful practice, a balanced mind develops that is light, flexible and happy. Gone are the swings from elation to despair based merely on what is happening around us. Many problems, such as ill health, spring from the experience of a busy, distracted and overwhelmed mind. By subduing this inner turbulence, meditation practice makes way for genuine happiness and contentment to arise from within. This inner peace shields us from the pressure and hassles of everyday life. So if you’re feeling stressed, with more pain than joy in your life, fretting about tomorrow, ensnared by the past, or if you’re upset - with yourself, someone else, or the way things have gone - consider trying meditation! • Kelsang Oden Canadian Buddhist Nun and Teacher Jampa Ling Kadampa Buddhist Centre 94 Dunlop Street West, Barrie, ON www.meditateinbarrie.org 705-733-5255 18 weiV eirraB By Louise Buckley You will unlock more of your natural abilities ecapS wandediscoverT yb dehsilbuP reality you would eivr taW eh a confidence and have only dreamed of before. The list is endless, isn’t it? At the same time, at the back of your mind, aware of it or not, there may be a reservation. One that tells you, “I can’t wait! But…” And you can fill in the blank. Maybe it is, “There are snakes or bees” or your “golf game should be better”. These thoughts can dampen or quench the excitement of the new season. And for some people, the “BUT” is so loud that the joy of Spring and Summer doesn’t exist. ssenlleW & htlaeH larutaN enizagaM Suppose for a moment that you could remove that fear of snakes, being late or near water.
