A New Welcome for Hospital Patients and Their Families

The newly renovated and expanded hospital entrance admissions area at the Jay and Betty Van Andel Center was dedicated in 2017 . In addition to creating a more inviting environment for all visitors to the hospital , the redesign provides more privacy and amenities for incoming patients and their family members .
Upon entering , visitors are greeted by a staff member and , depending on their purpose , are directed to a public waiting room or to a private assessment room . A special children ’ s waiting room with toys and a television was also created . New patients arriving by ambulance are greeted at a separate , discrete entrance that allows Contact Center staff to better serve the individuals and the ambulance teams .

Patient Admissions Experience Video
Have you ever wondered what it is like to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital ? Walking through the door at Pine Rest could make anyone feel a little anxious . We want individuals and their families to know they will be welcomed with understanding and treated with excellent care . We created a video that referral sources can share with patients and families to help them get a better understanding of the admitting process . You can watch the video at www . pinerest . org / patient-experience .
New Unit Provides Safe and Therapeutic Environment for Youth and Young Adults
Designated for adolescents and adults ages 13 to 24 , the new Cypress Unit is the fulfillment of many hours of conversations with area healthcare providers , law enforcement , community mental health representatives and others centered on , “ What do you think this community needs ? Where should Pine Rest concentrate its efforts ?” We were asked to focus our time and energy on serving more kids and young adults in crisis .
Implementing the latest research and best practices , the Cypress Unit is a state-ofthe-art psychiatric inpatient setting focused on maximizing safety while creating a therapeutic clinical environment . An additional 1,200 patients can be served each year in the 26-bed unit . The innovative new “ flex ” design allows the unit to split into two sides , creating immediate access for the two distinct patient populations — adolescents ( ages 13-17 ) and young adults ( ages 18-24 ).
The unit design seemlessly blends natural light , spacious common areas , quiet rooms , sensory rooms , outdoor courtyards , a treatment mall and patient rooms to create a warm and inviting space .
