Table 1 indicates that there were five hundred and eleven (511) Appeals (exclusive
of Petty Civil and Family Court) filed in the 2012-2013 Law Term. This figure
represents an increase of 16.4% in the number of matters filed in the Court of
Appeal when compared with the number filed in the 2010-2011 Law Term. Three
hundred and twenty-nine (329) of these originated from the High Court and one
hundred and eighty-two (182) from the Magistrates’ Courts.

Reshaping the
Judiciary Identity
Civil Appeals from the High Court accounted for three hundred and one (301) or
58.9% of all matters while Criminal Appeals accounts for twenty-eight (28) or 5.5%
of Appeals filed in the 2012-2013 law term.
Additionally, reference is also made to matters which originated from the Magistrates’ Courts. Matters filed at Port of Spain accounted for 19.6% of Appeals filed
with one hundred (100) filings, San Fernando 15% with seventy-seven (77) filings
and Tobago 1% with five (5) filings. It should be noted that filings at Tobago Magistrates’ Court decreased by 44% during the period under review.
