The Mediation Unit plays a vital role in the operation of the Family Court’s
dispute resolution. Table 29 represents the yearly trends of the number of
completed referrals over the last four court terms. The total number of referrals from High Court was one hundred and ninety-two (192) in 2011 -12 which
decreased in 2012-13 to one hundred and thirty (130). The Family Court’s
Magistracy, over the last two terms, also saw a decrease in the number of
referrals. In 2011-12 there were a total of one hundred and fifty (150) referrals
however in 2012-13 a mere seventy (70) referrals were submitted to the Unit.

Judiciary Identity
Regarding the Family Court IntakeUnit, the number of matters referred fell
significantly from fifty-seven (57) in 2011-12 or 14% to forty-five (45) or 18%
in 2012-13 There were no referrals to the Mediation Unit from the Social
Services Unit, Port of Spain High Court, San Fernando High Court and St
George West Magistrates' Court during the last two court terms. The overall
number of referrals resulting in completed mediations significantly
decreased from three hundred and ninety-nine (399) in 2011/12 to two
hundred and forty-five (245) in 2012/13.
